Stardusters and the Glitter Supernova
11/13/2024
In the depths of the interstellar void, where darkness and light intertwine like cosmic lovers, a solitary beacon flickered with the promise of splendor. The stars twinkled with delight like glitter sparkling up the universe as Sequin Serenade and her rockstar band performed once again on the stage of Sonic Sanctuary. On the powerful planet of Sparklestar, beneath the garden shop that used to be run by the sweetest old gentleman, Stardusters played their songs for a crowd of misfits. The only indication of their presence was the single beam that escaped their underground venue, and the rumbling of the ground from the stomps and claps of every being present. On Sparklestar, happiness was a privilege saved only for those who were direct descendents of Earth.
The band was made up of four rocker sisters who knew it was wrong of the Sovereign Commanders to steal the happiness of the people of Sparklestar. Sequin Serenade, the lead singer, had been a fifth generation Sparkinian since the day she was born; her voice had a special sound that seemed to channel the ethereal beauty of the universe. Luna Serenade, the guitarist, had talent like no other. Her guitar melodies resonated with the cosmic frequencies of Sparklestar and mixed harmoniously with the sound of Sequin’s voice. Luna’s twin, Nova, was the bassist who shredded on her glittery, blue bass that never failed to keep people’s hips swaying. The final sister, Solstice, was the most iconic drummer throughout the galaxy, and her pulsating drums reverberated through the venue, touching every heart that yearned for happiness.
Fifty years ago, the Earthlings invaded Sparklestar after their planet exploded into cosmic dust. Their presence was unwelcome, and they took everything from Sparkinian’s. With the advanced and foreign technology they brought from their planet, they found a way to bottle up the happiness of every Sparkinian and redistributed it to those that were of Earthling origin. They forced Sparkinians to leave their homes and jobs in favor of their advanced species, and worst of all, they formed a group known as the Sovereign Commanders to enforce their unjust laws. Somehow, through all the chaos and destruction, the Serenade sisters came together and realized they had a power gifted to them from Sparklestar. They had the power of happiness, and they intended to share it with all their fellow Sparkinians in whatever way they could. Through the power of music, the Stardusters became internationally known as the cure for the Dark Days everyone lived in; they played secret shows every Friday and people from around the planet would gather in hopes of escaping the permanent depression the Earthlings and Sovereign Commanders had instilled in them. Sequin’s voice, Luna’s guitar, Solstice’s drums, and Nova’s bass mixed together beautifully to create a delight so strong that it immediately brought every being at the concert out of their depressive slumber.
Every concert had its charm, but this show was especially important. The Serenade sisters had been working on a new song that contained the most powerful note of them all. The perfect harmony. If they could pull this off, they would successfully take back their planet. The perfect harmony was so powerful that no Earthling could withstand the frequency of the note, which would lead them to bursting with pure ecstasy until they were nothing more than glitter and sparkles. Because the Stardusters were known fugitives, the Sovereign Commanders naively followed their trail of purposefully placed clues so that they could join the concert just as their final song would play.
At the moment, the band was finishing up their final song before the encore, and the crowd was going wild. Supreme joy filled the room and coursed through the veins of everybody in the crowd and the band. The Sparkinians fist pumped, jumped, and screamed the lyrics of the final song in anticipation for Starduster’s new tune.
Before this moment, no one had ever successfully fought against the Sovereign Commanders. About a decade ago, there was a group of Sparkinians who formed a resistance against the Sovereign Commanders. Unfortunately, the group, known as Star Nation, did not garner enough support for their cause and were ultimately defeated. As punishment, the Sovereign Commanders built one hundred pods for each of the hundred Star Nation members and sent the pods into space. The Sparkinians remember the tragic loss of their family and friends as one of the biggest losses in Sparklestar history. The Star Nation members were doomed to forever float in space with no hope of reaching contact with any life form ever again. Their happiness was drained from their bodies before they left, and they were forced into the ugliest garments that had ever touched a Sparkinian body. On Sparklestar, clothes are one of the key elements that Sparkinians use to thank the planet for its nourishment and care of the beings that inhabited it. To strip a Sparkinian of their glitter and gems was to take away the one thing that would always tie them to the planet that raised them. The Serenade sisters never moved on from the fall of Star Nation, especially because their parents led the movement and were publicly humiliated by the Earthlings as a way of establishing the lengths they would go to to maintain order. When they discovered their ability to provide happiness through the power of song and dance, they knew it was up to them to finish what their parents had started.
Five years ago, the Serenade sisters came together to form Stardusters and began to gather as many Sparkinians as they could to join their musical movement toward freedom. The shows were held at various secret locations in the dead of night, and although everyone knew the risk of being caught at the show was an unspeakable punishment, they continued to show up week after week in hopes of being touched by the magic of happiness. Month by month, the crowds doubled in size, the music got a little louder, the ground shook a little harder, and the Sparkinians grew more and more angry at the Earthlings for all that they stole. As the anger and resentment grew, Stardusters knew that the time for the perfect harmony was approaching and they began making posters that would lead the Sovereign Commanders right to Sonic Sanctuary, the venue for their final concert in hiding.
“Sequin! Luna! Nova! Solstice!” The crowd wildly cheered for Stardusters to retake the stage and perform their final song, and just as the colorful lights ignited the stage, the doors burst open and a flood of Earthlings dressed in khaki pants and red polos invaded Sonic Sanctuary. The Sovereign Commanders had arrived and the show began.
All four of the Serenade sisters took the stage and Solstice began the song.
“1, 2, 3, 4! Let’s go girls!”
"In a world of shadows, darkness reigns
But glitter still flows through our veins,
We won’t give in, we’ll take back our world!"
As their song begins, the Sovereign Commanders stop their fighting with the Sparkinians because they, too, are captivated by the music. As their hips start swaying and their fists start pumping, their skin begins glowing in all sorts of iridescent shades. The first chorus hits, and their skin begins shining brighter and brighter with every word.
"So let's dance through the pain,
Let's sing through the rain,
We'll take back our happiness, make it our domain,
In a world of sparkle, we'll forever reign!"
Luna begins shredding her pink guitar during her solo so powerful that it reverberated through the hearts of every being on the entire planet. After she finished, the band softened their sound and a single light shined down on Sequin as she sang the bridge.
In our pop princess palace, we'll dance on rainbows,
In our glittery kingdom, our love always shows,
With every beat of our hearts, with every twirl and spin,
We'll take back our happiness, let the joy begin!
Slowly, every instrument started coming back and a beam of light reintroduced the sisters to the crowd. As the tension in the bridge built, so did the tension in Sonic Sanctuary. Until finally, the final chorus hit. On the last line of the chorus, the sisters began building their harmony, and successfully reached the perfect harmony on the final word. As they held onto the perfect harmony, the Sovereign Commanders began shining so bright that they burst into the sparkles and glitter that rained down on all the Sparkinians as the song finally finished. A glitter supernova like no other. The Sparkinians went wild with cheers of delight. They knew that the planet was once again theirs, and that happiness would never be stolen from them again.
As the Sparkinians ran through the doors into the outside world, they danced and smiled in a way that they hadn’t been able to do in so long. As the sun rose and lit up the planet to signal the beginning of a new day, the Sparkinians held hands and let their skin shimmer in the warmth of the sun. The planet was theirs.
